20,000 people in Wigan on the journey of life with Jesus

Our vision is for 20,000 people in Wigan to be somewhere on the journey of following Jesus by 2022.

This adventure begins with those who take the first steps of exploring things through to the more confident steps of engaging in the Christian faith and then onto the courageous steps of helping others to find their way forward on the adventure.

'Church' is simply the collective name for all the followers of Jesus - commonly known as his 'disciples'.

Unfortunately, over the years we have created a different version of Church that has confined us to buildings and services and caused us to be totally reliant on priests to do things for us. But, whilst we need buildings, services and priests, what we really need is all the followers of Jesus to be better together at living out their faith in vibrant communities of fellowship and worship in their neighbourhoods and networks.

So, we are transforming the way we are being and doing Church in Wigan. We will be helping leaders, ministers, priests and people to refresh what we do now and plant new fresh expressions of church to better help people join in the journey of faith in ways that better serve their needs and culture.

Many Worship Communities in Wigan

A Worship Community is created when a bunch of disciples in a neighbourhood or network find a way together of looking 'up' to God in worship and prayer, looking 'in' to one another with love and care, and looking 'out' to others around them with a generous invitation to join the Worship Community in their adventure of life with Jesus.

Currently we are growing two types of Worship Community.

The first type is refreshed traditional church congregations that identify themselves as congregations in a parish with their own building and priest. Each of these is being refreshed as a Worship Community with a renewed method of leadership, fellowship and outreach for growth into the future.

The second type is our new fresh expressions that enable various groups to explore and express their faith in ways that make sense in their culture and experience. We are cultivating new leadership teams to build strong relationships in these communities and networks to help many more people in Wigan to find their way forward on the adventure of following Jesus.

Wigan has several neighbourhoods and networks. We will connect Worship Communities together in Hubs that best serve this culture. Hubs will be formed on a relationship basis to nurture the making and growing of disciples of Jesus in Wigan.

Each Hub will have a Hub Leader and an Associate to oversee, equip, support, and help the Local Missional Leaders and their teams to grow their Worship Community ... and plant new ones.

Church Wigan

Together these Hubs are joined together as one Church Wigan with an overall Leadership Team comprising all the Hub Leaders.

A new approach requires new ways of leading and serving the church and community. The role of every minister – lay and ordained – will shift onto a new pathway as we find ways of working better together across Wigan as a dedicated team.

Clergy will no longer be confined to one or two Worship Communities but rather enabled to work better across the whole Church with specific leadership or ministry roles.

Every disciple of Jesus will be encouraged to use their own specific gifts in worship - serving God, one another and others they live and work with each and every day. The transformation of our relationships with God, one another and others is key to accomplishing our vision through this strategy.
